Scar revision: lots of options

Scar revision: lots of options

September 15, 2017

Scar revision surgery is used to minimize the appearance of a scar, usually on the face. The goal is to match the color and texture of your skin. Procedures can range from topical treatments to surgery to remove the scar tissue. A lot depends on the severity, the location and the size of the scarring. Sometimes a combination of treatments will be the most effective route.

Here are some of the tools in your plastic surgeon’s toolbox.

  • Topical treatments — Gels and other products can treat the discoloration of the skin.
  • Injections — Dermal fillers can filled indentations. The treatment must be repeated to maintain results. Also, steroid-based compounds can reduce the appearance of raised scar tissue.
  • Surface treatments — Dermabrasion, laser therapy, chemical peels or skin bleaching can soften surface irregularities and even out the pigmentation.
  • Surgical removal — This is reserved for deeper scars that involve layers below the skin surface.

If you have specific questions about the procedures, you can schedule an appointment with your plastic surgeon for a consultation.
