Black Hills ski areas are open for business, and there’s enough ice on Deerfield Reservoir for ice fishing. And the Black Hills are famous for pristine meadows perfect for cross-counrty skiing, showshoeing and snowmobiling.

That means folk will be bundling up and going out. Even though it’s cold outside, you can still get an unhealthy dose of sunshine. Frigid temperatures, cold winds and bright sun, often hitting you from above and below as the light reflects up from the snow, can give you a serious sunburn.

Did you know that the facelift is no longer among the top 5 cosmetic surgeries? It’s not because people are naturally maintaining smoother skin as they grow old. Other options such as Botox, injectable fillers, radiofrequency tightening and laser therapies are becoming more popular.

But a facelift does indeed create a smoother, more youthful look. The surgeon starts near the ears, removing excess skin and tightening deeper layers of skin and muscle to give the face a smoother surface.

Scars are usually an unpleasant reminder of something bad. Car accident. Fire. Surgery. Injury. Maybe something worse. You probably can’t remove the memory, but modern plastic surgery can remove or drastically reduce the reminder.

“Getting your nose out of joint” has nothing to do with plastic surgery or even the need for plastic surgery. It’s an ancient saying that dates back as far as 1581, and it means reacting with hurt feelings or anger.

That 1581 reference is attributed to Barnaby Rich, in his “Farewell to Militarie Profession.” He said, “ “It could bee no other then his owne manne, that has thrust his nose so farre out of ioynte.”

Sounds even more painful in Early Modern English.

The term plastic surgery conjures up Hollywood celebrities and over-the-top makeovers that leave patients looking something other than real. But the truth is, a lot of everyday people use plastic surgery to improve the way they look, and therefore the way they they feel about themselves.

Breast surgery is about much more than increasing cup size. Large, heavy breasts can be an unnecessary burden for women. Backache, neck pain and posture problems are common effects. Bra straps can cause painful indentations in a woman’s shoulders. In fact, breast reduction surgery to alleviate these problems is covered by some health insurance plans.

Extremely big noses are the stuff of plays and movies. The 1897 play, “Cyrano de Bergerac,” was about a French nobleman whose large nose caused him deep self-doubt. “Roxanne,” the Steve Martin movie, was a modern remake.

But some 400,000 people have rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, every year in the United States. They are not Cyrano, by any means. Some have rhinoplasty to correct breathing problems. (In fact, health insurance will sometimes cover the procedure.)
